The Cygnians

Those few humans that have managed to escape an encounter with the strange aliens call them Cygnians, after the constellation in the direction from which they appear. Accounts of them indicate they are gargantuan, blob like creatures that travel through space. They attack by shooting out what appears to be a beam made of liquid that gloms onto whatever is in its way to immediately begin breaking down any substance it contacts. People, when hit with this liquid beam are immediately broken apart and seemingly sucked up into the creature to be digested. The very limited number of psychics that have come into contact with these malevolent aliens have come away horrified at best. Most have been driven mad or died, while some are no longer able to communicate in any way.

The truth about these aliens is that they are made up of communities of single cell creatures that, when in close proximity to one another attain sentience. To rise to a minimum level of sentience requires huge forms, hundreds of feet in size, with a mass of several tons. Once they've attained consciousness, two or more individuals can combine, enabling them to accomplish truly astounding leaps of intuition and thought. Doing this regularly, they have developed a technology that is simply beyond the bounds of human understanding, and they have done it within just a few thousand years of the time their first individual mind sprang into existence.

That first mind, though drastically altered by now still exists to this day. Over time, it has moved through numerous bodies, taken on additional minds, mixed and mingled and even split into multiple pieces, yet maintained its “individualism” across thousands of years. This joining does not dilute the individual, but rather reinforces it. This concept of individualism, for a human mind is regarded as truly alien.

Their home world is one of water and is of immense proportion. The Cygnians can move around and manipulate their environment in ways that are impossible for “simpler” beings like ourselves. Their minds shift focus at the speed of light by simply willing themselves across their massive corporal forms. They quickly found ways to create new forms to inhabit by altering the density and composition of their native medium by using their intuitive control of the meta-dimensional energy flowing through them. Eventually, they altered and inhabited virtually every bit of liquid on their world, becoming what amounts to a single massive intellect.

With time and experimentation, they were able to form and inhabit lighter than air vessels that lifted them out of the water in which they lived and the atmosphere above it. In short order, they managed to escape the gravitational bounds of their world by manipulating the shape and density of their vessels and then providing propulsion using their massive and evolved intellect. Space travel found them creating mile or more long forms while their true essence remained safe behind a frozen outer shell. They soon realized that they would not be able to travel any significant distance without utilizing the meta-dimensional universe to bypass the distances between stars. With their massive intellects immune to any deleterious effects of meta-energy, they were easily able to bend it to their will. Out among the stars, they discovered the galaxy harbored life and began absorbing these new forms as they encountered them in a thus far failed attempt to incorporate those rudimentary minds into their own.

The Cygnians are the source of the Scream some 500 years ago. It was their first attempt at bridging vast distances with meta-dimensional energy and the shock wave caused by the attempt injured them. With that one experience, they were able find a way to act on the meta-energy that would not cause another shock wave. With this breakthrough, they took to the stars.

The aliens view the life forms they come across throughout the galaxy in the light of their own existence, seeing humans and other relatively common creatures as a sort of complex virus. They are thus far unable to understand the extent to which we communicate with each other, use tools and create art. They began absorbing us as they encountered us, attempting to bring our minds and theirs together. As with all other physical minds they’d encountered, they were unsuccessful yet continued to try. They assume that any being unable to merge with them is of little intellect and lacks sentience, but their encounters with humans have them baffled as we appear intelligent, having as we do complex societies and space flight and the like.

If we could find a way to communicate with the Cygnians, we would be able to find that they travel through space using the same scientific principles that the psychic powered gates harnessed. They can almost instantaneously traverse hundreds of light years, and more. Their “ships” can hold our own ships within and travel to any destination within the galaxy in mere moments. They have also tried visiting nearby galaxies, but they are unable to maintain the “bridge” long enough to find their way. Of their few attempts, they were forced to reverse direction and come back to Milky Way. A chorus of powerful human psychics could increase the possibility of their finding the correct path to cross to another galaxy.
